We’ve made it to the final episode in this three-part miniseries all about magazines. We’ve therefore also made it to the final module of our course, all about magazine production. If you’ve listened to nearly any other episode of this podcast, it will come as no surprise to you that I am a fan of print. A BIG fan. I was first introduced to the world of printing 17 years ago and it has played an integral role in my life ever since.
The printed medium is a powerful medium, one that helps text and images escape The Screen and exist in reality through ink on paper. Print gives editorial content a lifespan longer than the scroll of a webpage and provides it with a more permanent home on someone’s bookshelf, coffee table or beside their bed. The tactility of a beautiful stack of paper containing text and images cannot be outdone by a backlit screen with the same cold, hard swipe after swipe after swipe. Print exists as the gentle turn of a page with a definitive start and end, versus a vertical, never-ending pool of online content, so deep that even the strongest sometimes feel like they’re drowning in a bottomless sea of information. In days swallowed up by the monotony of our devices, print offers a refuge, a quiet escape, removed from the noisy digital landscape.
Anyhoo, I could wax poetic about print all day but the reality is there are many magazine readers who prefer to consume magazine content in a printed format.

My co-host, first year student Apurba Roy, will be helping me ask Darren some important questions about magazines in print. Welcome Darren and let’s get this conversation started!
