204: Designing Long Documents with Graphic Designer, Yas Fakhr

Welcome to the second of six episodes in this year’s magazine miniseries!

If you want to learn more about the magazine industry through conversations, I encourage you to check out the 15 previous episodes in this series: 055-057, 063-065, 119-121 and 149-154.

Our guest today is Yas Fakhr. Yas is a multidisciplinary designer, fuelled by her passion for meaningful and thoughtful design solutions. She is currently working at Underline Studio, where she continues to innovate and create impactful designs. Yas’ passion spans projects in branding, editorial, digital, and environmental design. Apart from design, she's a proud 3/week coffee drinker, avid book lover, and a plant enthusiast.

In this conversation, you’ll hear Yas’ process for creating long documents and the very best book design and printing geekery between she and myself. You’ll hear Yas’ advice for what new designers should consider at various stages in the long document design process. You’ll learn Yas’ thoughts on grids, including when to make them and when to break them, as well as what’s on Yas’ Adobe InDesign wish list. Finally, we dive into the murky waters of AI in the design space and how Yas has seen it used effectively and ethically among she and her colleagues.

This episode is part of a guest lecture series in CGCM 720 Magazine Production & Publishing, as well as DG 8111 Digital Publishing in The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University.
