315: Launching a New Magazine with Krupa Patel of TURMERIC Magazine

Welcome back Magazine Makers!

We’re having conversations with magazine-makers— big and small, new and seasoned, independent and commercial—from all over the world, who are sharing what they do and how they do it. This year’s line up includes folks making magazines for kids, art and culture, as well as luxury lifestyle magazines, and a massive global publisher who covers all of this and more. There’s something for everyone in these 4 episodes.

This episode features Krupa Patel, a Toronto and Ahmedabad-based independent magazine maker, founder and editor-in-chief of TURMERIC Magazine—an independent print publication documenting emerging artists, spatial practices, and contemporary culture through a lens of storytelling from the Indian subcontinent and it’s diaspora.

Krupa has an academic background in Architecture from OCAD University, has worked in producing over 30 public art and placemaking projects across Canada with municipalities, and worked as an independent curator developing exhibitions that platform emerging voices and explore the intersections of art, design, and everyday life.

In this conversation, you’ll hear how Krupa became inspired to create TURMERIC Magazine and how she uses language and linguistics to strengthen the publication’s message and the meaning.

With no formal graphic design or publishing education, you’ll hear how Krupa navigated editorial, design, printing, and global distribution steered by 3 words: fun, quirky, and contemporary. Krupa looks backward, sharing what she would do differently if she started again, as well as looks forward, sharing how she plans to evolve the magazine for issue 02 and beyond. Finally, you’ll hear why knowing your niche may be the key that unlocks your magazine making journey. This episode is action-packed with fantastic advice for all new magazine makers.
